Yesterday, a toothless man in tattered clothes tried to convince me that bad luck as I knew it was all wrong. It's not what you think, young man, he declared.  It's much, much darker than that. I nodded attentively as he explained that the 'bad' in 'bad luck' was not, in fact, 'poor' or 'down' but 'evil' - sinister like a movie villain or, as he said, like the devil himself but on a very hot day.  So who would win in a battle between good and bad luck, I asked.  Good always wins, he said.  I'm living proof of that!
